San Francisco legislators voted recently to completely ban the sales of vape products that don’t bear the Federal Drug Agency’s (FDA) stamp of approval. While the intention of the ban is to curb underage use, vape experts and health professionals fear that it will also result in an increase in smoking. The San Francisco vaping ban sets a worrying precedent that will likely be followed by other US states and cities. While it might result in a temporary reduction in underage use, it also creates problems for low-income vapers who rely on accessible vape products to keep from smoking deadly tobacco cigarettes.

According to the World Health Organization, tobacco smoking kills up to half of all smokers. And, while further research into the long-term effects of vaping is underway, current studies show that prolonged daily vaping does not negatively affect heart, lung, and circulatory health. Public Health England, the United Kingdom’s executive health agency, goes as far as to suggest that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking.
